Table of Contents

  • The Case of the West Memphis Three
  • The Case of Amanda Knox
  • The Case of Steven Avery
  • The Case of the Central Park Five
  • The Case of Michael Morrison

The Case of the West Memphis Three

In 1993, three teenagers in West Memphis, Arkansas, were arrested and charged with the murders of three young boys. The teenagers, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley, were convicted and sentenced to death.

However, there was little evidence to support the convictions. The teenagers had no prior criminal records, and there was no physical evidence linking them to the crime.

In 2011, after spending 18 years in prison, the West Memphis Three were finally exonerated. DNA evidence proved that they were not involved in the murders.

The Case of Amanda Knox

In 2007, Amanda Knox, an American exchange student, was arrested and charged with the murder of her roommate, Meredith Kercher, in Perugia, Italy.

Knox was convicted and sentenced to 26 years in prison. However, there was little evidence to support the conviction. The only evidence against Knox was the testimony of her former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, who later recanted his testimony.

In 2015, Knox was finally exonerated after spending four years in prison. The Italian Supreme Court overturned her conviction, ruling that there was not enough evidence to support it.

The Case of Steven Avery

In 1985, Steven Avery was convicted of the rape and attempted murder of Penny Beerntsen. Avery spent 18 years in prison before being exonerated by DNA evidence.

After his release, Avery filed a lawsuit against the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Department, alleging that he had been framed for the crime. The lawsuit was settled for $400,000.

In 2005, Avery was arrested again, this time for the murder of Teresa Halbach. Avery was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

However, there is substantial evidence to suggest that Avery was framed for Halbach's murder. The case against him is based largely on the testimony of two witnesses who have since recanted their testimony.

The Case of the Central Park Five

In 1989, five teenagers in New York City were arrested and charged with the rape and assault of a white female jogger in Central Park.

The teenagers, who were all black or Hispanic, were convicted and sentenced to long prison terms. However, there was little evidence to support the convictions.

In 2002, DNA evidence proved that the teenagers were not involved in the rape. The teenagers were exonerated and released from prison after spending between six and 13 years behind bars.

The Case of Michael Morrison

In 1984, Michael Morrison was convicted of the murder of his girlfriend, Susan Reinert. Morrison was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

However, there was little evidence to support the conviction. The only evidence against Morrison was the testimony of a jailhouse informant who later recanted his testimony.

In 2019, Morrison was finally exonerated after spending 35 years in prison. The California Supreme Court overturned his conviction, ruling that there was not enough evidence to support it.

These are just a few of the many cases of people who have been framed for crimes they didn't commit. These stories are a reminder that the justice system is not always just. Innocent people can be convicted of crimes they didn't commit, and the consequences can be devastating.
