In her latest book, renowned author Arundhati Roy delivers a searing indictment of the modern world, arguing that we have lost our capacity for imagination and empathy.
Roy begins by tracing the decline of imagination in the West, from the Enlightenment to the present day. She argues that the rise of capitalism and consumerism has led to a narrow, materialistic view of the world that has stifled our ability to think creatively and imaginatively. We are now living in a world, she says, where "the only thing that matters is money" and "the only thing that counts is profit."
This loss of imagination has had a devastating impact on our ability to empathize with others. We are increasingly unable to see the world from the perspective of those who are different from us, and we are becoming more and more intolerant of dissent. This lack of empathy is fueling the rise of nationalism, xenophobia, and violence around the world.
Roy also argues that the loss of imagination has made us blind to the dangers of climate change and inequality. We are unable to imagine a world that is different from the one we currently live in, and we are therefore unable to take the necessary steps to avert catastrophe.
The End of Imagination is a powerful and provocative book that offers a much-needed critique of the modern world. Roy's incisive analysis and passionate writing make this a must-read for anyone concerned about the future of our planet and our species.
