The Clayton Type Bo Bo Diesel Electric Locomotives: British Railways Class 17 were a class of diesel-electric locomotives built by the Clayton Equipment Company for British Railways. They were introduced in 1962 and were used on a variety of services, including passenger and freight trains. The locomotives were successful and remained in service until the early 1990s.

History

The Clayton Type Bo Bo Diesel Electric Locomotives were developed in the late 1950s as part of British Railways' modernization plan. The locomotives were designed to replace the ageing fleet of steam locomotives that were still in use at the time. The locomotives were built by the Clayton Equipment Company of Lincoln, England. The first locomotive was completed in 1962 and the locomotives entered service in 1963.

The locomotives were initially used on passenger services in the Midlands and North of England. They were also used on freight services, particularly on the coal trains that ran from the collieries in the Midlands to the power stations in the South of England. The locomotives were successful and quickly became a popular choice for both passenger and freight services.

Design

The Clayton Type Bo Bo Diesel Electric Locomotives were of a Bo-Bo wheel arrangement, with two four-wheeled bogies. The locomotives were powered by a diesel engine that drove a generator, which in turn supplied electricity to the traction motors. The locomotives were capable of hauling trains of up to 1,000 tons.

The locomotives were fitted with a variety of safety features, including an automatic warning system that alerted the driver to any potential hazards ahead. The locomotives were also equipped with a fire detection and suppression system.

Service

The Clayton Type Bo Bo Diesel Electric Locomotives were used on a variety of services throughout their career. They were used on passenger services on the Midland Main Line, the Great Eastern Main Line, and the West Coast Main Line. They were also used on freight services on the coal trains that ran from the collieries in the Midlands to the power stations in the South of England.

The locomotives were popular with both passengers and freight operators. They were reliable and easy to operate. The locomotives were also powerful and capable of hauling heavy trains. The locomotives were successful and remained in service until the early 1990s.

Withdrawal

The Clayton Type Bo Bo Diesel Electric Locomotives were withdrawn from service in the early 1990s. They were replaced by a new generation of diesel locomotives that were more powerful and efficient. The locomotives were sold to private operators and some were exported to other countries.

Preservation

A number of Clayton Type Bo Bo Diesel Electric Locomotives have been preserved. These locomotives are now used on heritage railways and at railway museums.
