Growth Of Canadian Crossroads And My Second Work Camp In Ethiopia In 1963
In 1963, I had the privilege of participating in my second work camp with Canadian Crossroads International (CCI). This time, I was part of a team of volunteers who traveled to Ethiopia to work on a community development project.

CCI is a non-profit organization that sends volunteers to developing countries to work on projects that focus on education, health, and community development. I first learned about CCI in 1961, when I was a student at the University of Toronto. I was immediately drawn to the organization's mission of promoting cross-cultural understanding and service.
My first work camp with CCI was in 1962, when I traveled to India to work on a rural development project. That experience was life-changing for me. I was deeply moved by the people I met and the work that I did. I returned home from India with a new understanding of the world and a strong desire to continue working for social justice.
When I heard about the opportunity to go to Ethiopia with CCI, I knew that I had to apply. I was eager to learn more about a country that was so different from my own. I was also excited about the opportunity to work with a team of volunteers from all over the world.
The work camp in Ethiopia was a challenging but rewarding experience. We worked long hours in the hot sun, but we also had a lot of fun. We lived in a simple village and ate traditional Ethiopian food. We also had the opportunity to learn about Ethiopian culture and history.
One of the most memorable experiences of the work camp was a visit to a local school. The school was overcrowded and underfunded, but the students were eager to learn. We spent the day playing games with the children and helping them with their studies. It was an inspiring experience to see how much these children wanted to learn, even though they had so little.
The work camp in Ethiopia was a life-changing experience for me. I learned a great deal about myself, about the world, and about the importance of service. I also made lifelong friends from all over the world.
I am grateful to Canadian Crossroads International for giving me the opportunity to participate in this work camp. I am also grateful to the people of Ethiopia for welcoming us into their country and sharing their culture with us.
I encourage everyone to consider volunteering with Canadian Crossroads International. It is a life-changing experience that will stay with you long after you return home.
